Service Dog Training

Service Dog Training

Hampton Roads Dog Training is thrilled to now offer service dog training in Virginia Beach. Anyone looking to train their four-legged best friend as a service dog, helping others with daily tasks and providing support in stressful situations, now has a reputable training program available. Our team will not only provide instruction for your dog, but we’ll also train you as a skilled handler.

What does a dog need to do to become certified?

Service dogs are obedient and require extensive training to handle a variety of potential distractions. Service dog training includes calming training in any social setting, including situations with children and other animals. When your dog is “vested,” they’ll be able to work unflinchingly in any scenario.

Service dog training certification requires the following:

  • Basic obedience training
  • Public access testing
  • Task work training

How does a dog become a certified psychiatric or mobility service dog?

Dogs in our program will be trained to serve companions with mental, medical, and physical support needs. Our service dog training is ideal for handlers who may need additional mobility assistance or mental health support.

At this time, we do not offer medical alert service dog training.

Explore training options for your dog, including:

  1. Psychiatric Service Dog Training

This service is for anyone with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. These handlers require additional support with everyday struggles and in new situations.

  1. Mobility Support Service Dog Training

This service is for anyone struggling to get around independently. These handlers often need additional physical support, along with lifting items or opening doors.

For mobility assistance, the dog is required to be 50% of the handler’s weight and 40% of the handler’s height.

Your trained service animal will be able to assist

Once fully trained, your furry best friend will be trained to perform with the following tasks:

  • Behavior interruption
  • Medication retrieval
  • Deep pressure/deep touch therapies
  • Block and cover
